I was prompted by a recent comment posted on this blog to look at my all time favourite list of self motivational books. I thought I would do a top 20 but as you can see below I finished up with 18 (I didn’t want to force another couple on the list just to make up the numbers). This is a list of the books I have found self motivational over the years and sitting on my book shelf I return to them over and over again to access the timeless wisdom. The first on the list is by Napoleon Hill who is considered the grandfather or even great grandfather of the personal development movement. Each of these books has helped me at different times in my life to overcome life’s challenges and focus on a way forward.
Think and Grow Rich Napoleon Hill
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People Stephen Covey
Unlimited Power Tony Robbins
Awaken the Giant Within Tony Robbins
Change your Thoughts-Change your Life Wayne Dyer
Eat that Frog: 21 Ways to Stop Procrastinating Brian Tracy
See You at the Top Zig Ziglar
The Road Less Travelled M. Scott Peck
The Celestine Prophecy James Redfield
Lead the Field Earl Nightingale
How to Win Friends and Influence People Dale Carnegie
Man’s Search for Meaning Viktor Frankl
As a Man Thinketh James Allen
The Essays of Ralph Waldo Emerson Ralph Waldo Emerson
The Art of War Sun Tzu
New Passages Gail Sheehy
The Book of Secrets: Unlocking the Hidden
Dimensions of Your Life Deepak Chopra
Chicken Soup for the Soul Jack Canfield/Mark V Hansen
If you want more information on these books see the “Take a Look” box at the top of the blog.
I hope you can take time to peruse some or all of these books and gain the self motivational insights I have gained from them. New books are being written all the time and they all have the potential to inspire. However I doubt if any new works will actually add to the significant knowledge base contained in this list. I hope you find this interesting and useful. I would be glad to hear from you what books you think are missing from this list of classics.

If you would like to implement some of Stephen Covey’s best ideas, you can use this web aplication:
http://www.Gtdagenda.com
You can use it to manage and prioritize your Goals (in each of your life’s categories), projects and tasks, in an intuitive interface. It has a Checklists section, for the repetitive activities you have to do, important but not urgent (Quadrant II, for example your routines/habits). Also, it features a Schedules section and a Calendar, for scheduling you time, activities and for the weekly review.
Some features from GTD are also present, like Contexts and Next Actions.
And it’s available on the mobile phone too, so you can access it wherever you are.

Hi there!
I’ve spent the past week getting hold of most of the books in this list and having some good old fashioned time to myself. I’m very glad I did too! I’ve been inspired and motivated to take action on things I have wanted to for years. This list should be spread for others to enjoy, truly priceless!
Thank you for your inspiration.

I like the list of books you mentioned; I would add a few of my favorites:
1. The Wisdom of Insecurity by Alan Watts
2. Island by Alduous Huxley
3. Zen Mind, Beginners Mind by Suzuki
4. Manifest your destiny-9 spiritual principles to get everything you want- by Wayne Dyer

I would like to add one that I have found extremely effective and that one is called The Choice Is Mine
http://thechoiceismine.com
This one works at the subconscious level and is also very very good at allowing you to see the subtle thoughts and beliefs that you have that are keeping you from living the life you love.
A powerful course indeed.

I’d just like to mention that I found the large print version of “Eat That Frog” very helpful. The site I found it at is http://www.readhowyouwant.com/pcsWebUI/BookDetail.aspx?BookId=13231. Hope this is useful to someone.
